Happy 4th of July

This doesn't really relate to why we celebrate the 4th of July, but it's pretty amazing! God Bless America and our soldiers! :)

Some things you may not know about the guards at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. God Bless our servicemen and America!

On Jeopardy the other night, the final question was How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of the Unknowns ---- All three missed

This is old news to some, but worth remembering this 4th of July..

THIS MAKES ME PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN

ARLINGTON CEMETERY - Jeopardy Question

it --
This is really an awesome sight to watch if you've never had the chance, Very fascinating.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

1. How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of the Unknowns and why?

21 steps. It alludes to the twenty-one gun salute, which is the highest honor given any military or foreign dignitary.

2. How long does he hesitate after his about face to begin his return walk and why?

21 seconds for the same reason as answer number 1

3. Why are his gloves wet?

His gloves are moistened to prevent his losing his grip on the rifle.

4. Does he carry his rifle on the same shoulder all the time
and if not, why not?

He carries the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb. After his march across the path,he executes an about face and moves the rifle to the outside shoulder.

5. How often are the guards changed?

Guards are changed every thirty minutes,
twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.

6. What are the physical traits of the guard limited to?

For a person to apply for guard duty at the tomb, he must be

between 5' 10' an d 6' 2' tall and his waist size cannot exceed 30.' Other

requirements of the Guard: They must commit 2 years of life to guard the

tomb, live in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot drink any alcohol on

or off duty for the rest of their lives. They cannot swear in public for the

rest of their lives and cannot disgrace the uniform {fighting} or the tomb in

any way.. After two years, the guard is given a wreath pin that is worn on

their lapel signifying they served as guard of the tomb. There are only

400 presently worn. The guard must obey these rules for the rest of their

lives or give up the wreath pin.

The shoes are specially made with very thick soles to keep the heat

and cold from their feet. There are metal heel plates that extend to the

top of the shoe in order to make the loud click as they come to a halt.

There are no wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform. Guards dress for duty

in front of a full-length mirror.

The first six months of duty a guard cannot talk to anyone, nor

watch TV. All off duty time is spent studying the 175 notable people laid

to rest in Arlington National Cemetery .. A guard must memorize who they are

and where they are interred. Among the notables are: President Taft, Joe

E. Lewis {the boxer} and Medal of Honor winner Audie Murphy, {the most

decorated soldier of WWII} of Hollywood fame.

Every guard spends five hours a day getting his uniforms ready for

guard duty.

ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD, AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM.

In 2003 as Hurricane Isabelle was approaching Washington , DC , our

US Senate/House took 2 days off with anticipation of the storm. On the ABC

evening news, it was reported that because of the dangers from the

hurricane, the military members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb of

the Unknown Soldier were given permission to suspend the assignment. They
respectfully declined the offer, 'No way, Sir!' Soaked to the skin,

marching in the pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that guarding

the Tomb was not just an assignment, it was the highest honor that can be

afforded to a serviceperson. The tomb has been patrolled continuously,

24/7, since 1930.

God Bless and keep them.

I don't usually suggest that many emails be forwarded, but I'd be
very proud if this one reached as many as possible. We can be very proud
of our young men and women in the service no matter where they serve.

A Young Woman's Walk with God chapter 2 #1

A Loving Heart
The fruit of the Spirit is love.
Galatians 5:22

Finding Out More About Love

We can't read very far in the New Testament without realizing that love is important to God.
(Ephesians 5:2, John 15:12, Matthew 22:39, and Luke 6:27) As a child of God, we are to love others as God loved us. How has Jesus loved you? What does the kind of love you're supposed to give to others look like? The bible gives us principles that help us understand Christian love.

Principle #1: Love is an act of the will

We often only want to show love when we are chipper, but we also must show it when we are tired. It's not easy. We must show Christian love even when we don't feel like it. We often must...
~ give love when we want to withhold,
~ reach out to others when we are tired and want to rest,
~ serve when we want to be served, and
~ help others when we ourselves are hurting.
(John 3:16, Matthew 20:28, and Luke 9:51)

Principle #2: Love is action- not just words

Love is also an action. If we are asked to help someone ,when we don't want to, if we have a bad attitude it speaks that we aren't doing it in love. (1 John 3:18) We need to have a happy heart when asked to help.

Principle #3: Love reaches out to the unlovely

It is easy for us to love the ones that are sweet, and kind, but sometimes we need to love those who are mean and hurt your feelings. God calls us to love both. (Matthew 5:43-45) Jesus loved those who wanted to crucify Him! We need to strive yo be like Christ.

Principle #4: We need God to help us love

We can't get the any of the fruits of the Spirit without God. It is easy for us to love those who love us, and very hard for us to love those who hate us (Luke 6:32-33, and 6:25) Love as God loved and ask Him to help you.

Principle #5: Love expects nothing in return

When we show love towards someone we often expect them to give us something in return. Jesus tells us to love without expecting anything in return! (Luke 6:35) He also commands us to love one another like He has loved us. (John 13:34)

Beautiful Girlhood #3

Keeping Up Acquaintance

"If God so loved us,
We also ought to love another."

Did you ever have a friend with whom it was hard to keep acquainted with? You parted on good terms and thought of her as a friend all the time, but when your met again you found that once more you must become acquainted. I have had such experiences, and found them
unsatisfactory. I would rather a friend be a friend all the time.

Sometimes we aren't acquainted with ourselves. We change so fast and our likes and dislikes change so fast that we get confused about what we are like. We act different, speak different, like different things, dislike different things, etc. (example) One day we'll like the color black and the next day we will absolutely hate it.

As we want to keep acquainted with our friends we must keep acquainted with ourselves and our mothers. Yes, our mothers! They play an important part in our lives. When we are blind they see that we need there help and they will guide us if we give them the chance. When we are changing, we are growing as well. Our arms will grow longer as will our legs. We may become clumsy. We will reach for a drink and spill it because our arms are longer than they were and we will have strength that we didn't have before. We also must keep acquainted with God. He is the one that will help us and stand by our side.

We need to strive to keep acquainted with our parents and with God in this time. We must listen to them when they are trying to teach us and help us through this trial. We will want to spend an hour in the morning fixing our hair, or we might say we can't do the ironing for Sunday because it might damage our hands. This is selfishness and our parents and most importantly God can help us through it.
